Burnout & Chronic Stress Therapy
For high-achieving women exhausted from carrying everything
Burnout is not laziness or failure. It is your nervous system telling you that the way you have been operating is no longer sustainable. High-functioning women often learn to adapt by over-functioning: excelling at work, managing everyone else’s needs, and pushing past physical limits. Eventually, living in perpetual "get through it" mode leads to profound depletion that rest alone cannot fix.
What This Can Look Like
- Profound physical and emotional fatigue that sleep does not fix
- Cynicism, detachment, or loss of joy in things you used to care about
- Compulsive people-pleasing or difficulty saying no
- A nagging fear that if you slow down, everything will fall apart
- Irritability, reactivity, or feeling emotionally raw
- Physical symptoms: headaches, gut issues, chronic tension, or frequent illness
Why It May Happen
Many high-achieving women learned early that being capable was the safest way to exist. If love, safety, or stability were conditional on performance, your nervous system learned that resting was risky. Achievement became a survival strategy.
That is why burnout is so disorienting. The strategy that kept you safe and made you successful is the same one that is now depleting you. You cannot will your way out of it because the pattern lives in your nervous system.
A vacation will not fix it. A productivity system will not fix it. These approaches treat burnout as a time-management problem when it is actually a nervous system problem.
How It Shows Up in High-Functioning Women
High-achieving women are especially vulnerable to burnout because the drive that made you successful is the same drive that keeps your nervous system from resting. You did not get here by accident. You got here by pushing through, staying ahead, and holding everything together, often for years. The exhaustion is not a character flaw. It is information.
How Nervous System Patterns May Be Involved
Burnout is a nervous system pattern. When your system has been running in mobilization for too long, it eventually begins to collapse. That collapse is not weakness. It is your body drawing a line it cannot cross. Working at the root means helping your nervous system learn that it is allowed to stop.
How Regina Approaches This Work
I do not start with productivity hacks. I start by understanding what your drive is protecting. Often, the achievement pattern is connected to something deeper, an early experience where you learned that your worth depended on what you could do for others.
I use EMDR and DBR to work with the survival patterns underneath the burnout, and IFS to understand the parts of you that are carrying too much.
The goal is to help your nervous system learn that you are allowed to rest without everything falling apart. Many women find that when the underlying pattern softens, they are not less effective. They are more resourced.
What Sessions May Feel Like
Sessions are spacious and unhurried. I start by noticing what is present, not by pushing for productivity. When I use EMDR or DBR, I work with the patterns underneath the exhaustion, gently and at a pace that feels steady. Nothing is forced.
